چکیده

Application of computational linguistics, i.e., language translation by computer, has been proposed as a means of producing readable translations of technical English-to-Vietnamese. This report is about an experimental study of the readability of translations that could be used for training or equipment maintenance. The experiments involved assessing the readability of Vietnamese that had been translated from English by three methods: (1) expert human translators, (2) un-edited translation by computer, and (3) edited computer translation. English was a control condition. Readers included two groups of student pilots: 168 in the Vietnamese Air Force (VNAF) and 88 in the USAF. Material that was translated consisted of three 500-word passages sampled from a standard Air Force text, Instrument Flying. Readability was measured by : (1) reading comprehension tests, (2) cloze procedure, and (3) clarity ratings. Time to complete each of these tasks was also measured. Major conclusions of the study are : (1) expert human translators produce more readable translations of technical English-to-Vietnamese than is done by computer; (2) Vietnamese readers, trained in English, show the highest comprehension when dealing with that language; (3) comprehension loss becomes relatively greater, as more and more difficult material is read, for computer-based translations than for human translations; (4) method of translation docs not affect reading speed. 2 H.W. The Correlation of Machine Translation Evaluation Metrics with Human Judgement on Persian Language

Machine Translation Evaluation Metrics (MTEMs) are the central core of Machine Translation (MT) engines as they are developed based on frequent evaluation. Although MTEMs are widespread today, their validity and quality for many languages is still under question. The aim of this research study was to examine the validity and assess the quality of MTEMs from Lexical Similarity set on machine tra...

A new model for persian multi-part words edition based on statistical machine translation

Multi-part words in English language are hyphenated and hyphen is used to separate different parts. Persian language consists of multi-part words as well. Based on Persian morphology, half-space character is needed to separate parts of multi-part words where in many cases people incorrectly use space character instead of half-space character. This common incorrectly use of space leads to some s...

A Quantitative Insight into the Impact of Translation on Readability

In this paper we investigate the impact of translation on readability. We propose a quantitative analysis of several shallow, lexical and morpho-syntactic features that have been traditionally used for assessing readability and have proven relevant for this task. We conduct our experiments on a parallel corpus of transcribed parliamentary sessions and we investigate readability metrics for the ...

Statistical Machine Translation with Readability Constraints

This paper presents experiments with document-level machine translation with readability constraints. We describe the task of producing simplified translations from a given source with the aim to optimize machine translation for specific target users such as language learners. In our approach, we introduce global features that are known to affect readability into a documentlevel SMT decoding fr...

Language Independent Evaluation of Translation Style and Consistency: Comparing Human and Machine Translations of Camus' Novel "The Stranger"

We present quantitative and qualitative results of automatic and manual comparisons of translations of the originally French novel “The Stranger” (French: L’Étranger). We provide a novel approach to evaluating translation performance across languages without the need for reference translations or comparable corpora. Our approach examines the consistency of the translation of various document le...
